Readers speak out on the loneliness epidemic

Poll Question: Loneliness has become recognized as a serious mental-health issue impacting as many as one-in-two American adults, according to U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy.  Much more than simple melancholy, it can be associated with greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death, he said.

Comments:
• The people who move to DI tend to be active and involved, for the most part. I would worry about some of the residents in the assisted living or retirement communities, though I think the staff there do try to keep them engaged.
• I just tough it out. Sometimes I go out to the bar just to be around other people. It has been devastating to me. I do suffer from PTSD, depression and anxiety as well so I am on medication to deal with that but honestly loneliness, I just white knuckle it. It’s a huge issue so thank you for bringing it up and awareness.
• Keeping busy!
• I try to find fun things to do with my friends and family, however I always end up back at home alone, wake up alone, eat alone. I try really hard to keep my mind busy with reading or watching a series on TV, planting flowers or yard work.
• I’ve had a couple of friends who lost spouses after many years of marriage. Myself and other friends made extra efforts to stay in touch - even if it was long distance - as they grieved and learned to adapt to living alone.
• I haven’t resolved this. Am withdrawn and depressed and 72.

Next week: Most dangerous intersections locally

As the Daniel Island and Cainhoy peninsula populations grow, so do the traffic problems in the areas. Congestion at intersections can be both frustrating and dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike. As area officials debate various solutions – more traffic lights, roundabouts, flashing crossing signals, etc. – residents often offer many of their own ideas. Which intersections do you consider most dangerous or congested? Share your thoughts at surveymonkey.com/r/Dangerous_Intersections by Sunday, May 28, at 5 p.m. And be sure to tell us about other intersections that concern you.
