Readers weigh in on the most dangerous area intersections

Poll Question: As the Daniel Island and Cainhoy peninsula populations grow, so do the traffic problems in the areas. Congestion at intersections can be both frustrating and dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike. As area officials debate various solutions – more traffic lights, roundabouts, flashing crossing signals, etc. – residents often offer many of their own ideas. Which intersections do you consider most dangerous or congested?

• Let’s be honest with this. A lot of people on DI do not stop for stop signs or crosswalks. I recently was on a walk at lunch and at an intersection, I was in the middle of the crosswalk and a car approached, slowed down, and kept going. I guess they didn’t see me in the crosswalk. I used my hands to hit the hood and push myself out of the way. The person was very apologetic and got out of the car to make sure I was okay. I have seen car after car ignore stop signs and crosswalks, and the drivers get pissed and flip you off if you point it out to them. It’s ridiculous.

• Clements Ferry is a disaster one end to the other. Clements Ferry at 526 the main culprit. Poor planning up and down the corridor.

• Pier View and Seven Farms intersection is too dark at night, there are not enough street lights. It is very hard to see pedestrians after dark. This intersection and many others across DI need better street lighting.

• Leaving Beresford Creek Landing is a nightmare unless it’s 2 a.m. High schoolers who are just getting their driver’s license have to leave this neighborhood and they are barely experienced to deal with this type of maneuver. Something needs to be done for this entire area around the marina and this subdivision.

• The speeding on Pierce Street is out of control. So many kids ride their bikes to DI School and cross over from Pierce to Jenys St. to and from school. There should be a stop sign and/or crosswalk.

• Corner of River Landing Drive and entrance to 200 River Landing Drive.

• Etiwan Park Street and Seven Farms Drive by the church.

• Lights are needed at Monica Court and Clements Ferry Rd for sure. There’s a stupid intersection that needs to be fixed and needs signage. It’s right beside the Point Hope Center and leads behind the Publix. People can’t tell that it’s only one way in and one way out. I’ve seen cars entering the exit and exiting the entrance!! Do not enter signs are desperately needed there. Also, we need a light at The Peninsula entrance. It’s impossible to exit left in the morning commute. And MOST OF ALL - why doesn’t Clements Ferry Road have streetlights????? When can we get them?

• You cannot see when turning from the feeder onto Fairchild. It is so dangerous at night because it is not well lit.

• Please put a street light on the divider in Fairchild St. and a “Right Turn Only” lane on Fairchild going away from town.

• Intersection of Ithecaw Creek St. and Lesesne. There is a stop sign that only about 30% of the drivers stop at and it is a two-way street that needs a center line painted on the road.

• Two points need to be considered: New lighting as this is a very dark area at night, (Fairchild and River Landing) it can be difficult to see the road when coming from 526 taking a left onto Fairchild. The lane should be a right turn only at Fairchild when trying to take a right from Fairchild onto River Landing and on to 526. Many times the traffic is backed up due to the first car going straight.

• Crosswalk in front of White. (Bucksley Lane/Pier View Street/Seven Farms Drive) No lights at night to see pedestrians.

• Traffic Circle: intersection near Holy Cross Church heading towards Publix on Seven Farms Drive, the merge lane presents a safety hazard as drivers turning right off of Daniel Island Drive onto Seven Farms do not yield or look for pedestrians.

• River Landing Dr. and road to 200 River Landing Dr. would benefit from marked crosswalks and 3-way stop.

• Marina Drive/Clements Ferry Rd. could use a stoplight or large roundabout that can accommodate commercial traffic. The Bojangles/Exxon station needs a stoplight.

• Monica Court/Clements Ferry - stop light would work best. Too much traffic, too many trucks. Hard to turn left.

NEXT WEEK: Getting to know your neighbors.

When moving to a new town or even just a new neighborhood, getting to know people and finding where you fit in can be a challenge. Luckily, the Daniel Island/Cainhoy area has a number of local organizations that new residents can join and get to know their neighbors.
Which organization or activity would you suggest to newcomers? Share your thoughts at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Neighbors_2023 by Sunday, June 4, at 5 p.m. And be sure to tell us about specific groups in your area that do a good job connecting people
