Ten and Five Years Ago in The Daniel Island News
In the April 6, 2006 issue, the top news story the city announced that a park would be ready for use by students when the new Daniel Island School opens in the fall. The Charleston Parks Department took over construction of the park behind the school from the Berkeley County School District because it had the resources to finish the park facility in the limited time before students will be back in school, according to Parks Director Steve Livingston.
In other news, as the area was set to celebrate Earth Day we reported on efforts by the Daniel Island Company to be “green”, including creating a “nesting meadow” along Pierce and Gibbon streets, planted native aquatic vegetation on the Ralston Creek Course, in Smythe Park and in all of the recently constructed ponds, installing an “intelligent” irrigation system at Smythe Park, and planting thousands of trees as part of the island tree program.
