Turner Claims Championship With a Course Record Eight Under Par 64

***image1***On the final day of competition, Emmett Turner of Greenwood tied a competitive course record of eight under par 64 for a four-day total of 274 to claim the 2005 SCGA State Amateur Championship. Turner’s spectacular round gave him a two-shot victory of Columbia’s Warren Thomas who finished with an equally impressive six-under-par 66.
Turner, a former Augusta State golfer, started the day on a good note making birdies on the par-4 first hole and the par-5 fifth. Two more birdies on holes six and eight left the 22-year-old at four under par for the day and two strokes out of the lead. After routine pars on holes 10 and 11, Turner seized control, making birdies on four of the next five holes.  Maybe the most important hole in that stretch however was not a birdie hole, but the curling seven footer to save par on the 235 yard par three 15th. The lead would be one that Turner would not relinquish finishing with two solid pars and claiming the championship by two shots.  Turner’s final round 64 tied the competitive course record set earlier in the week by Cheraw’s Baker Elmore.
Finishing alone in second was Warren Thomas after shooting 30 – 36 for a final day total of 66 and a tournament total of 276. Kevin Kisner of Aiken used a five-hole birdie run on the back nine to vault him into third place at 281. Martin Catalioto fired a final round of 69 to claim fourth and finishing tied for 5th was Greenville’s Lee Palms and second and third round leader Stephen Poole of Spartanburg.
The 74th Annual State Amateur Championship was conducted over the 7,073-yard Beresford Creek Course at the Daniel Island Club on Daniel Island. The Amateur Championship is one of 17 major events conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association throughout the year. The 2006 Championship will be conducted at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.
