Youth Sports Update

  • Family Circle Palmetto Cardiovascular Junior Challenger A Huge Success

The first annual Family Circle Palmetto Cardiovascular Junior Challenger was played this past weekend at the Family Circle Tennis Center. Over 160 junior players signed up for the first annual event, which is aimed at creating additional playing opportunities for young tennis players.

The Family Circle Tennis Center joined forces with local sponsor, Palmetto Cardiovascular Thoracic & Associates, to create a tournament where the focus is on learning and developing the game. Many of the players live here in the tri-county area but many of them have traveled from various parts of the state including Greenville, Columbia, Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach. The Family Circle Palmetto Cardiovascular Junior Challenger was open to boys and girls in five age divisions (10,12,14,16,18) in both singles and doubles. Because the tournament was classified as a challenger, participants in the boys and girls 10 and under division had to be ranked outside of the Top 15 statewide. For competitors in the remaining age divisions (12-18), juniors had to be ranked outside of the Top 25 statewide to play. This was a great opportunity for junior players to get some important tournament match experience.

Mt. Pleasant Recreation Expands Volleyball Program

***image2***With its exciting season now in full swing, the Mt. Pleasant Recreation Department’s Lowcountry Volleyball League has seen a rapid increase in participation this year after teaming up with three other recreation departments in the area.

With the help of the recreation departments in St. Andrews, Hanahan and James Island, the league was able to increase its registration locations, as well as gain more facilities for use on game days. As a result, the league experienced a massive growth, now up to 31 7th-and 8th-grade teams as opposed to last year’s 13 teams.

League games began on Thursday, Sept. 8, with participation from 15 local middle schools. Those schools east of the Cooper River include Christ our King Stella Maris School, Moultrie Middle School, Palmetto Christian Academy, and Thomas Cario Middle School. From Charleston are Ashley Hall, Charleston Day School, Northwoods Academy, Porter-Gaud School, Mason Preparatory School and Summerville Catholic School. Other area schools include Blessed Sacrament School, Fort Johnson Middle School, Hanahan Middle School, James Island Middle School and West Ashley Middle School.

Steed encourages community members to come and support the league by attending upcoming games. "The goal of the league has always been to encourage sportsmanship in all areas of the game, whether it’s among the girls, coaches or parents …We hope everyone will come out to see how successful this league has become," she said.

The teams play twice a week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. The season will end with a post-season tournament on Oct. 15, 17 and 18.
