In October, the Daniel Island Rotary Club participated in their annual Dictionary Project, which gives area third graders an opportunity to own their own personal dictionary. This year the club delivered dictionaries to three area elementary schools: Daniel Island School, Philip Simmons Elementary, and Cainhoy Elementary. All in all, there were about 235 dictionaries donated between the three facilities. At the Nov. 1 meeting of the Daniel Island Rotary Club, Citadel Professor David L. Preston spoke to club members about his most recent book, “Braddock’s Defeat: The Battle of the Monongahela and the Road to Revolution.” Dr. Preston is the Westvaco Professor of National Security Studies at The Citadel, where he teaches cadets and officer candidates about U.S. military history and early American history. He is “one of the most gifted young historians writing today,” according to the eminent historian and Pulitzer-Prize winner David Hackett Fischer.
The Daniel Island Rotary Club participated in one of its annual food drives on Nov. 21, delivering some 165 meals/turkeys to the Cainhoy Community Center for the Thanksgiving holiday. About 18 Rotarians volunteered for the event, which was organized by club member Cecil Mills. The group thanked Publix for putting together the meals and boxing up the turkeys.
On Nov. 15, Daniel Island Rotarians participated in two of their annual Christmas service projects. The first was the Seafarers Project, in which the club packs 100 care boxes with toiletries and other essentials for the seafarers who are at port in the Charleston area over Christmas and unable to be home with their families during the holidays. The second was gift-bagging blankets for Meals on Wheels recipients who are in need this time of year. “A very big thanks to Pat Richards for ordering all the goods and coordinating the efforts this year,” said Rotarian Derek Epperson. “...It was a huge success once again!”
