BE boys' golf team ends season with runner-up finish at state championship

The Bishop England boys’ golf team placed second in the AAA State Golf Championship at True Blue on Pawleys Island on Tuesday, May 16.

After a first round 314 the team was in third place behind Gilbert and Waccamaw. The Bishops shaved 13 strokes on day two to shoot 301 and secure second place. Waccamaw won the title with a two day total of 578.

“I was very proud of our performance at state,” said BE Golf Head Coach John Greavu. “Not only did we come back strong in the final round, we fired our lowest score of the season when it mattered most. That’s a testament to the character and determination of our guys.”

The Bishops were led by senior captain Ben Quinque who birdied the 18th hole to shoot a 2-under 70 in his final round. Quinque’s two day total of 144 (74-70) earned him a 4th place finish individually and All-State honors. Also scoring for BE were Tommy Verner 83-76, Sam Manning 75-81, Brendan McHale 85-74 and Austin Dowd 82-82.

“The team worked hard all season and trusted the process and though we struggled a bit in regular season, they stayed the course and the results showed up in postseason,” added Greavu. “Three of our lowest scores of the year came in our final four rounds with wins in region and lower state and then a second place at state.”

Bishop England won their region and the Lower State qualifier to earn a spot at the state championship. The Bishops won three straight state titles from 2013-2015.
