Bishops and Lady Bishops take down Warriors

Both the Bishop England basketball teams showed up against the Wando Warriors on Saturday. The girls overwhelmed Wando as they have been doing for the last couple years, winning their game 74-39. The shock was in the boys’ games – the Bishops beat the Warriors 69-58. The Lady Bishops have been dominant in last few years under Coach Paul Runey. Similar to last year’s recipe, the Lady Bishops won the game using defense to create transition offense. In the Wando game, the girls piled up 15 steals. Two Bishop’s had fantastic games. Caroline McQueeney played a near flawless game, scoring 28 points, which is her season high. She did so on 8 of 11 shooting as well as 11 of 13 from the foul line. Coach Runey said, “Caroline McQueeney really hustled, did the best she’s done all year.” Rhetta Moore, who played fantastic all last year, carried that into the new season. She finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals. In the boys’ game, the Bishops beat the Warrior men’s team by 11. Brendan McHale scored 25 points and had 6 steals. Christian Drummond put in 16 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Much like the girls, the boys forced turnover after turnover, finishing the night with 14 steals. The Bishops had to match the guard heavy Wando team. Four guards started for BE, and all played well. McHale was definitely the leader, but Jake Owens, Leo Albano and Daquan Washington all joined McHale in the back court. Albano scored 9 while Washington and Owens each supplied three steals, helping BE outpace Wando. Coach Bryan Grevey praised McHale, “Brendan has put his time in, and he worked so hard last spring and this summer to work on the things that he needed to work on, and now you’re seeing the fruits of that hard work. He’s come out. He is shooting the ball very well for us and he’s one of our co-captains, and certainly a team leader. You know, the good thing is that I get him another year after this one.” The Bishops and Lady Bishops both had games played First Baptist after we went to print. You can check the score of them online at besports.net. They play Charleston Math and Science on Friday. On Saturday, both teams play their cross-town rivals, the Porter Gaud Cyclones. This is their last week of games before their holiday tournaments.
