DIS Osprey basketball season wrap-up - Part 2

Four Daniel Island School basketball teams made it to the playoffs this year – the fifth grade boys, sixth grade girls, seventh grade girls and eighth grade boys. Below is a summary of the season for the seventh grade girls, submitted by their coach, Josh Soper, and a list of awards for several of the teams. Summaries and awards for the fifth grade boys and sixth grade girls were featured in last week’s issue of The Daniel Island News.

SEVENTH GRADE GIRLS

The seventh grade Lady Osprey’s basketball team at Daniel Island School entered the playoffs with a 12-0 record and as the #1 seed in their division. Their pursuit to the championship game started with a convincing win against PCA, 29-12 in their first round game hosted at Philip Simmons Middle.

Their second round game was against an athletic West Ashley team. This game proved to be one of the best team wins for the Lady Ospreys all season. The Lady Ospreys played tenacious defense, allowing West Ashley to score only 10 points. The Lady Ospreys pride themselves on their defense because they have only allowed their opponents to score 11.5 points on average, per game this season. This win gave the Lady Ospreys the opportunity to return to the championship game against a very good Mason Prep team.

Mason Prep showed up to the championship game with a strong team, highlighted by a force inside the paint and an excellent guard. The duo ended up being the difference in the game, leading Mason Prep to the ultimate victory, 35-19. Maddie Moehlman and Ella Soper both took home “All Tournament Awards” respectively.

The season did not end the way the Lady Ospreys wanted; however, the team played hard and competed from the tipoff to the final buzzer, as they have done all season long. Coaches Josh Soper and Jim Chambers are extremely proud of this team. It was an amazing run with a special group of girls. On top of a 14-1 season record, the Lady Ospreys won the “Academic Cup Award” for highest team GPA in the Trident League! Watch out for this team next year!
