DISA U15 girls' soccer team invited to take part in President's Cup Southern Regional Championship

Perhaps you were taking a walk or bike ride earlier this year or last fall and heard a chant rising from the winds…. “We are the Gators, couldn’t be prouder, can’t hear us now so we’ll yell a little louder….WE ARE THE GATORS COULDN’T BE PROUDER! GO GATORS!” It is a mantra that has been a part of the group since its inception in 2014, but this summer the DISA U15 girls’ soccer team may need to try to add a Texas twang to that cheer.

Led by coach Andrew Kirk, the 16 girls on the Gator roster have qualified to participate in the President’s Cup Southern Regional Championship, June 11-June 16 in Round Rock, Texas. They will compete against teams from as far south as Florida and as far west as Texas. The invitation to play is the first one extended to a girls’ team from the Daniel Island Soccer Academy.

“This U15 DISA Gators team heading to Regionals is a very special team,” said Erik Cobb, DISA director. “Many of these girls have been with us since they were 8 and 9 years-old and have always stuck together and embodied what it truly means to be a team and family. Fast forward to now, this team and group of girls is a major focal point at DISA. They have set and continue to set a very high standard for all of our teams, both on and off the pitch. This group puts in the hard work day-in and day-out and they absolutely deserve all the success they have achieved and will achieve.”

The honor comes after a 6-1-1 season in the President’s Medal Soccer League. The team also recently won the Charleston Challenge Tournament and had a good showing at the Disney Soccer Showcase in November 2018.

The girls are currently trying to fundraise as they prepare for their trip to Round Rock. They will be hosting a bake sale and cookie decorating station at the Concert in the Park this Saturday, May 11, at Smythe Lake. In addition, they have a raffle for a Torker 3000 27” unisex bike (sponsored by Cooper River Cycles). Tickets are $10 each (or three for $20) and are available through the DISA Booster Club’s Paypal account (disaboosterpp@gmail.com) or from any of the girls associated with the team. The winner will be drawn at the Concert in the Park, so please submit before Saturday at noon. The girls also have a GoFundMe account and would appreciate any and all community support (bit.ly/gators2019).

“Many of the girls are playing at the high school levels at Bishop England, Philip Simmons and other high schools in the area and are contributing to the programs very early on, so I’m excited to see them continue their soccer careers at the high school levels,” added Cobb. “I remember coaching many of them when they were just starting at U9 and now getting to see them play at this level has been an absolute blessing.”
