Don't miss the chance to experience great fishing conditions

I am happy to report that my elbow is sufficiently recovered, and I have returned to fishing. However, I am “supposed” to keep my fishing trips short and the numbers of casts to a minimum. Not wanting to push my luck, that is exactly what I set out to do. Sadly, my restraint lasted about 15 minutes.

The fall bite is going off. Redfish, trout and flounder are around in good numbers and feeding aggressively. Inshore slams (catching a redfish, trout and flounder in single trip) are regular occurrences. Plus, the weather has been fantastic. Cool mornings and warm afternoons. All these factors equate to long fishing trips, lots of casts and a very sore right elbow. But it is worth it. The fishing is that good!

Saturday was cold and windy. Undeterred, I bundled up and launched the Pathfinder into the falling tide. After a short run, I spot locked the boat near the mouth of a creek that was draining into the main river. A few casts of a Z-Man MinnowZ (Houdini) on a quarter ounce lead head jig produced a couple of keeper-size flounder. They were invited home for dinner. A few more casts completed the inshore slam. This was just what the doctor ordered — a short trip with a minimal number of casts. Unfortunately, I kept right on fishing. The bite was just too good to stop.

On Sunday, the weather was perfect. Clear skies, a slight breeze and warm temperatures had me fishing again. The bite was not as strong as the day before, but it was still pretty darn good. Once again, the MinnowZ (Houdini) was the hot lure. A subtle jig and long pause retrieve produced a bunch of trout and a few redfish. Most of the strikes came on the long pause when the lure was just sitting on the bottom. As the water cools, a slower retrieve cadence is usually better.

Fishing is great right now. Over the next few weeks, it will get even better. Don’t miss it!
