Local kids swim, bike, and run Daniel Island in the 11th Annual Daniel Island Kids Triathlon

Sixty young athletes from the Daniel Island region competed at the 11th Annual Daniel Island Kids Triathlon, which started and ended at Pierce Park Pool. The young athletes ranged from 7-14 years of age with each one being encouraged by friends and family that gathered the surrounding areas.

The distances varied depending on the age of the competitor. Seven to ten year olds completed a 100 meter swim, 2.4 mile bike ride and a ½ mile run while the 11-14 year olds completed a 200 meter swim, 5.5 mile bike ride and a 1 mile run.

First place in the girls ages 7-8 went to Ellie Chalupsky with a time of 20:05. Amelia Perkis came in second place at 22:01 just beating Addison Stephens who finished in third at 22:04.

In the boys 7-8 year old age group, Bryce May claimed top position with a time of 17:58. Max Jensen topped Daniel Scarth by only four seconds as the boys finished 19:39 and 19:43:00 respectively for second and third.

In the girls 9-10 year old division first place went to Josephine May with a time of 16:53. Baeley Allenspach took second with 18:09 and Merritt Zieminick took third with a time of 18:18.

In the boys 9-10 year old division Anders King took the blue ribbon with 13:37. Next in was Matthew Doty at 14:07, followed by Pinckney Smith at 17:23:00 to claim third.

Isabella Chambers took first place in the girls 11-12 age group where with a time of 35:37. Jennifer Szlosek placed second at 38:21 followed by Sarah Smith in third at 45:15.

Riley Allenspach claimed top position in the 11-12 boys with a time of 34:30:00. John Raup came in second with 36:39.00 followed by Fordham Smith at 38:36:00.

Jack Henry Doty was the only competitor in the 13-14 age group for both men and women groups. Despite the lack of competition, Doty raced against the clock and finished with at 27:46 to receive the blue ribbon.

The race was sponsored by the City of Charleston Recreation Department, under the direction of Jen Nelsen. The Charleston Police department were also present on the day to help keep the children safe while competing. Additional sponsors included Harris Teeter, Sunbelt Rentals (sunbeltrentals.com), Daniel Island Business Association, Daniel Island POA, Johnston Signs, and the Charleston Battery. Edward Jones/Jim Rowan’s office sponsored the shaved ice truck. It was a great day for all!
