Make sure your tow vehicle is capable of pulling your boat

The bite is good and should continue as the weather cools

A few months ago, I purchased a Pathfinder 2500 Hybrid boat because I wanted a more capable nearshore fishing platform. While I love the nearshore performance and handling of the Pathfinder, it is significantly larger than the 22-footer it replaced. This made launching and recovering the new boat with my Toyota 4Runner a bit of a problem.

On steep and slick boat ramps (like the one on Beresford Creek), the 4Runner was not up to the task. It is not a good feeling when the boat pulls the tow vehicle down the ramp. As a matter of fact, it is downright scary. After receiving an early Halloween scare, I decided to treat myself to a full-size truck with 4-wheel drive. Now, launching and recovering the new boat is a breeze.

Speaking of breeze, the remnants of Tropical Storm Nestor brought gale force conditions to the Lowcountry. This kept me off the water all weekend. Thankfully, I was able to fish before Nestor arrived and the weather deteriorated. The trout bite was strong. Most of the fish were smaller (around 12-14 inches) but there were enough big ones mixed in to keep things interesting. Ladyfish and bluefish were feeding in the same area as the trout so the bite was pretty much nonstop.

Most of the action happened around oyster bars that were just getting covered by the incoming tide. Large schools of finger mullet congregated atop the bars. Predators were always close by. In this situation, you could throw your shoe to the oyster bar and probably catch a fish. Right now, the fishing is that good. As Halloween approaches and the water temperature cools, the fishing will get even better. Shoes are expensive. So, keep them on your feet and throw a Z-Man 4” Jerk ShadZ instead.
