New head basketball coach named for PSHS Iron Horses

The athletic leadership team at Philip Simmons High School is continuing to fill its roster. The Iron Horse athletic program has announced the hiring of the school’s first Men’s Head Basketball Coach - Garrett Campbell.

A native of Myrtle Beach, Campbell graduated from Myrtle Beach High School in 2006. Due to his love of basketball, learning, and the relationships he had built with his teachers, Campbell decided to pursue education as a career.

He attended College of Charleston (COC) and walked on to the basketball team. There, Campbell played for Coach Bobby Cremmins and was a part of one of most successful teams in the program’s history.

During his time at COC, the Cougars beat numerous powerhouse teams, including Tennessee, South Carolina, UNC, and a Davidson team with Steph Curry. The winning mentality that Coach Campbell acquired during his time at COC will be the foundation of the culture he plans to establish at PSHS.

After college, Coach Campbell started teaching at West Ashley High School (WAHS) and became an assistant coach in both the varsity and JV teams. He has been teaching and coaching at WAHS for three years under SC Hall of Fame coach, Ronnie DuPre. The Wildcats experienced great success during the past three years in reaching the playoffs every year and advancing to the Lower State playoff game during the 2015-2016 season.

Coach Campbell is one of the new math teachers at PSHS and plans to bring the winning mentality not only to the hardwood, but to the classroom as well.

Coach Campbell said, “I am extremely excited and honored to have the opportunity to lay the foundation for what will be a great program in PSHS Boy’s Basketball. Our goal is to put a team in place that the school and community can be proud of and also to prepare these young men for adulthood and their futures.”

“Coach Campbell brings with him a unique base of experience that will immediately impact the Iron Horse athletic program in a positive way,” added PSHS Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Brion Packett. “He’s passionate, energetic and is an extremely hard worker. I’m excited to work with him and to watch his impact on our Iron Horses both in the classroom and on the court.”
