New PSHS head volleyball coach named

Philip Simmons High School has added yet another coach to its sports team roster for the upcoming school year. Charleston native Jay Watterworth, a 2002 graduate of Goose Creek High School, has been named head volleyball coach for the Iron Horses.

Watterworth attended North Greenville University, where he became involved in intramural volleyball. After graduating, Coach Watterworth returned to Charleston and began his teaching career at Goose Creek High School, where he has been the Varsity Head Coach since 2007. In 10 years at the helm, Coach Watterworth guided his team to six playoff appearances, having reached the second round three times.

In 2013, Coach Watterworth was selected from 5,830 members of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association to coach the North South All Star Volleyball Matches at Erskine College. He has coached club volleyball for over five years and this summer will take his 16 National team to the National Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Philip Simmons High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Brion Packett states, “Coach Watterworth will be a huge asset to the Iron Horse Athletics Program. I have competed with and against Coach Watterworth over the last decade and I cannot think of a better individual to add to our team. The future is bright for our Lady Iron Horses!”

According to Packett, Watterworth will also be the school’s Josten’s “Renaissance” co-coordinator and will be attending a conference with fellow teachers, administrators, and students this summer in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Philip Simmons High School will be offering football, wrestling, and boys and girls soccer at the junior varsity level for year one. At the varsity level will be baseball, softball, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys golf and tennis, cross country, volleyball, track and field, swimming, and cheerleading. Students will compete in Region VI - 2A. For more information on the PSHS athletic program, visit http://ironhorseathletics.net.
