New year brings first cast, first fish...and first headache!

When I was younger, New Year’s Eve was cause for great celebration. Of course, back then, everything was cause for great celebration. Over the years, my focus has switched from partying all night long to fishing on New Year’s Day. This year was no different. On January 1, I woke up early (without a hangover) and went fishing.

As I was leaving the house, my saint of a wife (Amy) reminded me that we had lunch plans and I should endeavor to be on time. Duly notified, I set about the task of catching my first fish of 2019. The weather was warm, and the wind was calm. So, I decided to target redfish on the fly. A short run to a shallow flat put me smack in the middle of a large school of reds. I quickly deployed the power pole and picked up my fly rod. The school was 100 feet away and slowly swimming towards me. When the school was 50 feet out, I cast the fly a few feet ahead of the lead fish. It shot forward and inhaled the fly. The redfish was not particularly large, but I was elated. First fish of 2019 on the first cast of the year!

After releasing the fish, I decided 2019 could not start any better and went home. Upon my arrival, Amy asked if something was wrong (because I never come home early from fishing). In reply, I told her my first fishing trip of year was cause for great celebration and made a (large) pitcher of mimosas. On January 2, I woke up with a headache.
