No catch and release on best friends

After last week’s article, I have a little cleaning up to do. While Brody (the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog) is my best friend, I didn’t mean to imply that my children (Elliott and Maddie) are not my best friends. Now you may be thinking, how can he have three best friends? Good question! You have identified the hole that I find myself in.

Since you can only have one best friend, I declare that Elliott is my favorite son and Maddie is my favorite daughter. It is my sincere hope they do not realize that I only have one son and one daughter. If you see Elliott or Maddie, I would appreciate you not pointing this out.

Oh, wait a second. Brody just reminded me that Amy (my wife) is also my best friend. He said when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. Excellent point. So, I declare that Amy is my favorite wife. Since I have been married multiple times, this is an accurate statement.

Hold the press. Brody said you do not want to make Steph (my first wife) mad. Since we are actually pretty good friends, I declare her to be my favorite ex-wife (if there is such a thing).

Wow, that was complicated. Life would be much simpler if you could have multiple best friends. Speaking of friends, thanks to all the people who attended my speaking engagements last week. The turnout for the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club meeting and the Haddrell’s
Point Fishing Expo was outstanding. I truly appreciate the time and support of all my friends. Dare I say, best friends?

While I spent most of last week putting my foot in my mouth, I did take time to go fishing. My best friend and favorite son joined me for a quick trip offshore. The blackfin tuna bite was strong. At times, we would have four tuna hooked up at the same time. We kept a few for sushi and released the rest. On the ride back, Elliott and Brody settled into bean bags and fell asleep.

Looking at them, I decided you can have multiple best friends.
