Sometimes, dog knows best

It is humbling to realize that your dog is smarter than you are. For the past few years, I suspected this might be the case. Over the holiday weekend, it became abundantly clear. Brody, the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog, is smarter than me.

Over the long July 4 weekend, Brody and I planned to fish for Blue Marlin in Puerto Rico. Brody was a bit reluctant to make the trip because of the low rate of COVID-19 vaccination in Puerto Rico. When tropical storm Elsa popped up, Brody decided it was better to sleep on the sofa than to travel and fish. I decided to go on without him, but he suspended my American Express card and changed the combination on the safe where my passport is stored. I began to wonder.

A few days later, as Elsa approached the Lowcountry, I was about to go fishing. Sure, it was windy, and a severe thunderstorm was looming. Brody once again decided to sleep on the sofa rather than go fishing.  Since you do not need an American Express card or passport to fish in Beresford Creek, I went on without him. As I was walking down the dock to my boat, a bolt of lightning struck very nearby. About then, I decided not to fish. Brody was right again.

On Friday, the American red snapper season opened. It is only three days long. So, I was raring to go.  However, Brody said the seas were still too rough due to the tropical storm and decided to sleep on the sofa rather than go fishing for red snapper. I decided to go. While bouncing around in heavy seas, it occurred to me – your dog is smarter than you are.

I did not catch a blue marlin, redfish or red snapper. So, my picture for this week is of Brody sleeping on the sofa. He promised to re-activate my American Express and unlock the safe if I got his picture in The Daniel Island News.
