Daniel Island FCTC team scores national championship crown!

Every year, Daniel Island attracts some of the best tennis talent in the world, as evidenced by the influx of the sports’ top players taking part in the Volvo Car Open. But now it seems the island is also an exporter of talent as well.

The Daniel Island-based USTA Mixed 40 and over 8.0 team, based at the Family Circle Tennis Center, scored the top prize at the USTA National Championships held November 4-6 at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex, in Surprise, Arizona – a coveted national tennis title.

The Daniel Island team defeated a team from Tampa Bay, Florida, 2-1 in the championship match. Earlier in the day, the Daniel Island players overpowered a team from Fort Worth, Texas, 2-1 in the semifinals. They advanced by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is co-captained by Allison Pickhardt and Dave Williams and features Mathew Sears, Cristina Garrett, Nima Moghadam, Mark Pickhardt, Richard Hughes, Teri Robinson, Mandy Jones Mixson, Greg Yancey, Maria Rask Elliott, Tyler Davis, Christina Liegl, Elizabeth Forney, Stephanie Donley, Meghan Van Alen, Michael Millican and David Robinson.

“We formed our team one year ago during the SC State Combo championship in Hilton Head in November of 2015,” said Pinkhardt. “Our goal was always to win a national championship! Through hard work we accomplished our goal. It isn’t always an easy or fun job captaining. But this group made it a pleasure. We had so much depth with our talented team and the hardest part was picking only three lines each match (three females and three males). We are so thankful for the amazing community that came together in support of making this dream possible.”

“It’s pretty amazing!” added Williams “I don’t know if it’s even sunk in yet and it’s been a week! We are all just amazed. We got to the end of the season and there is nobody left to play! We had some struggles, overcame it, and made it all the way to the finals!...It was my first time going to nationals and it’s been above and beyond any feeling I could have imagined!”

Teen golfer hits third career ace in SCJGA tournament

Daniel Island resident Kathleen Sumner, a senior at Bishop England High School, now has three holes-in-one on her impressive golf resume. Sumner scored her most recent ace while taking part in an SCJGA tournament at Cheraw Country Club in Cheraw, S.C. on November 6.

According to her father, Steve Sumner, the hole-in-one was achieved with an 8-iron at hole #9, an uphill 135 yard hole. She scored her two previous aces within six weeks of each other in 2012. Sumner, also a member of the BEHS golf team, recently signed a National Letter of Intent Scholarship to attend Florida State University.
