Swanson named All-American by MaxPreps

Another day, another award for Bishop England Volleyball standout Montana Swanson.

Swanson has been named to many all-star and all-state teams her senior year, and was selected player of the year by the High School Sports Report, The Post and Courier and the Coaches Association of Women’s Sports (CAWS).

Now, Swanson has received national honors. For the second straight year, the senior has been named All-America by MaxPreps. She was selected to the small schools first team. She is one of 17 players in the country to be selected by MaxPreps.

“It’s quite an honor,” said the 5-6 senior hitter who recently helped the Bishops claim their 16th straight state championship, which equals a national record. “It’s a result of hard work. It’s amazing what hard work will do. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches. I have amazing coaches. And my family has had a big role.”

The Bishops went 40-9-4 overall record her senior season. She led the team with 318 kills, which was good for second in the Palmetto State. She was fourth in digs with 297.

Swanson joined the BE volleyball program as an eighth-grader and was on the junior varsity team for two seasons. She was promoted to the varsity and played for three state championship teams coached by Cindy Baggott.

She also played basketball and competed in track and field, but volleyball was her avocation. She said it’s difficult to pick out a favorite memory of her athletic life at BE.

“There are too many of them to choose one,” she said. “Winning that first state championship as a sophomore was great and winning one my senior year was fantastic. The one thing is I played with some great players and had great support.”

Swanson is an excellent student as well. She makes mostly A’s and is a member of the Key Club. She will attend USC Upstate to continue her academic and volleyball excellence.

“I am beyond excited to continue doing something I love at the next level,” Swanson said. “If someone had asked me five months ago where I wanted to go, USC Upstate would not even had been a choice. Once I found out about it, I decided to look into it, and I liked everything I saw.

“When I went there to visit, I fell in love with it. I just had that feeling. I think everyone who goes off to college needs to be able to call their college their “home,” and I for sure know that I can call USC Upstate my home.”

Swanson is also a candidate for prepvolleyball.com’s National Senior of the Year award. Winners should be announced by the end of the month.
