Swimmers earn personal bests at Myrtle Beach meet

Swim Charleston competed in the CAC Coastal Classic swim meet in Myrtle Beach, where 80% of the swimmers achieved their best times. The meet took place October 18-20 and was the first opportunity of the season for the swimmers to race against other teams.

There were many swimmers who earned double-digit time drops, including Daniel Island residents LJ LeVeen, 11, who dropped 57.26 seconds in the 500 meter freestyle; and Hayden Wilmot, 11, who dropped 30.79 seconds in the 100 meter breaststroke.

Twenty-one team records were broken in one weekend. Daniel Island resident Jason Chalupsky, 8, became the record holder in four new events — 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 25 breaststroke, and 50 breaststroke. Willa LeVeen, 8, swam the 100 meter butterfly for the first time and became the team record holder with a time of 2:28:18.

Fifteen members of the team achieved 27 new state cuts including Daniel Island resident Brady Evin, 10. Evin achieved two state cuts in the 50 breast and 100 breast. The state championship will take place in February in Greenville.

Swim Charleston began the season in September and will continue to encourage swimmers to try new events and achieve personal bests. The program also offers private lessons for children and adults as well as training for triathletes of all ages. For more information, visit swimcharleston.org.
