BE to perform chocolatey classic ‘Willy Wonka’

Bishop England High School will be performing Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka” in the Performing Arts Center on March 24-25 at 7 p.m. and March 26 at 3 p.m.

According to the licensing company Music Theatre International’s website, “The delicious adventures experienced by Charlie Bucket on his visit to Willy Wonka’s mysterious chocolate factory light up the stage in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fantastical tale.

Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder and new songs by Leslie Bricusse (Jekyll & Hyde, Doctor Dolittle) and Anthony Newley, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka is a scrumdiddlyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth.”

The website continued, “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka follows enigmatic candy manufacturer, Willy Wonka, as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka’s rules in the factory... or suffer the consequences.”

Sarah Smith, a senior at Bishop England, who plays Charlie Bucket, said she has learned a lot during the rehearsal process. “There are many things I’ve learned during this experience, but I think the most important is that I’ve learned how to believe in and trust in such a strong group of people and how to make the show better as a whole.”

Michael Lusardi, a junior at Bishop England, plays Willy Wonka and cannot wait for opening night. “My hope for opening night is we are able to put on an amazing performance that is well enjoyed by a large audience.”

There are 38 BE students involved in this musical: Michael Lusardi, Sarah Smith, Elijah Ludlam, Keegan Benton, Lillian Greenwell, Claire McLoughlin, Pierce Broussard, Mia Alvarez, Flynn Sweeney, Lily Austin, Conner Sennott, Chris Bleau, Kailey Laurinaitis, Isabella Giardini, Gabi Litzinger, Summer del Valle, Harrison Arnett, Aspen Crull, Addison Stephens, Tyler Burbage, Jarrett Sweeney, Chloe Cosca, Maddie Speizman, Mary Graham, Lily Runkle, Brooke Struckman, Caroline Johnson, Claire Carruthers, Victoria Viduya Jesion, Matthew Hart, Nat Bejarano, Jonathan Laurinaitis, Rutledge Hyman, Charlotte Lesslie, Jacqueline Corcoran, Leslie Valencia Garcia, Griffin Gillespie and Logan D’Agostino.
