Americans were battening down the hatches and preparing for stormy economic times. The effects included unemployment, less lucrative savings, tighter credit, inflation, declining net worth and spending cutbacks. Experts said there were strategies that people could use to weather the downturn. Among other things, investors should make sure their portfolios are broadly diversified, consumers should be more particular about what they buy and how much they pay for it, drivers should watch their gasoline usage and home sellers should take advantage of the longer sales time by sprucing up their homes.

With bluebirds spotted in Codner’s Ferry Park that spring, an article suggested it was time to clean, repair or put up new homes for bluebirds; one of our most beloved wildlife species, said Laurel Barnhill, wildlife biologist and statewide bird conservation coordinator with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

The feature article commemorated the 10th anniversary of Dragon Palace restaurant on Daniel Island. Dragon Palace landed in the spot it still occupies today on Seven Farms Drive in April 2003. It was one of the first tenants in the shopping center, alongside Publix and Coastal Carolina Cleaners. It stood to reason that this type of
cuisine would fare well in a town that was growing by leaps and bounds. Owner Sin Yung Cheng was counting on that potential, as explained in the article.

“It has not always been easy, but we have had tremendous support from the community,” stated restaurant manager Aven Whitmire at the time. “Our goal is to consistently serve top-quality Chinese cuisine and ensure that all of our customers have a positive dining experience at Dragon Palace and will continue to support us for the next 10 years.”

Plans for a public boat landing, proposed for the area along the Wando River beneath I-526 on Daniel Island, which had been in the works for more than 10 years, was delayed indefinitely. The plans were sent back to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for additional design work to be completed. This project never came to fruition.

The centerfold showcased the winners of the Volvo Car Open (now known as the Charleston Open). In one photo, Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands celebrated with a racket toss after winning her first Volvo Car Open title. She is the first Dutch player to earn the trophy!
Daniel Island resident Drew Bobey, a veteran ball crew member for the Volvo Car Open, was one of several honored during the tournament with a “Sylvia Huskey Spirit Award.”
