FIVE YEARS AGO In the October 7, 2010 edition of the paper, our cover featured a photo of painting Daniel Island Pink in advance of the Race for the Cure. And, we reported that Charleston Water Systems would increase the water rates by an average of 4.5 percent and sewer rates by an average of 5.5 percent each year for the next three years. In business news, Sermets planned to open by Park Day, on Saturday, October 23, 2010; Honeycomb Café was also set to open in late October; Tammy Haight (Vespa) and Tom Dowling (DI Grille) were co-chairing the new Retail-Restaurant Committee of the Daniel Island Business Association. And, in other business news, Prestige Real Estate Group added Holly Buceti and Bob Farina to their team (and they are both still there). Our centerfold featured a full spread of Buddy Walk photos! In sports, the Family Circle Tennis Center celebrated Charleston’s recent recognition as The Top Tennis Town in American with a party, and the paper featured photos of the celebration! TEN YEARS AGO In the October 6, 2005 edition of the paper our cover and centerfold featured stories under the headline “Island Apprentice – Internships on Daniel Island.” At the time, the Family Circle Cup hired a stable of interns in December and again in April for the tournament. Eleanor Adams directed the interns and agreed to the Donald Trump makeover. In news, we featured a story about Lynn Cobb, who moved to Daniel Island in 1998 and who, after a trip to China to participate in building two outdoor playground areas for Half the Sky (HTS), was then serving as the foundation’s southeast Volunteer Coordinator. The organization gets its name from the Chinese adage, “Women hold up half the sky.” The group helps provide playground equipment and other services to orphanages in China. In other news, City Council held their meeting on Daniel Island at Providence Baptist Church and approved an underground tunnel for golf carts on Island Park Drive. The Council also approved a proposal to grant a right of way allowing South Carolina Electric and Gas Company to lay an underground power line from its facilities to the new Berkeley County School on Daniel Island Drive. In school news, Hanahan High School AP students outscored state and national passing rates. In business news, Daniel Island resident Dr. Charles J. Turner recently opened his practice, Island Eye Care, located at 250 Seven Farms Drive.
