Historically speaking: DI cemetery project seeks to restore and preserve

Legislative update: Jim Merrill provided his first legislative column, updating the community about redistricting and praising Gov. Sanford’s efforts to improve the functions of state agencies. 
 
Wine festival: Laura Alberts hosted “Wine on the Wando Festival” where over 60 wines from around the world were made available for tasting with proceeds benefiting the Charleston Ronald McDonald House. 
 
DINA meeting: The Daniel Island Neighborhood Association held a meeting with several state and local politicians, including Jim Merrill, Larry Grooms, Shirley Hinson, John Kuhn, and Arthur Ravenel, with the main topic of discussion covering what would happen to the State Ports Authority land on Daniel Island.
 
Blackbaud Stadium wins “Best Of” award: For the second consecutive year U.S. Soccer named Blackbaud Stadium (which has since been demolished for new development) as a finalist in its annual “Best Of” awards. The stadium was one of six venues nominated as one of the best soccer stadiums in the United States that year.
 
Ten Years Ago – Nov. 21, 2013
 
Providence Baptist Church leads effort to package 10,000 meals for the hungry: Volunteers packaged meals in less than two hours for the Stop Hunger Now international hunger relief agency. The meals were shipped to Liberia as part of the program. The assembly process combined rice, beans, vegetables and a flavoring mix, providing essential vitamins and minerals into each small meal package.  
 
DI cemetery project seeks to restore and preserve: Dr. Ade Ofunniyin made it his personal mission to see that African-American cemeteries on Daniel Island were both preserved and restored. In collaboration with the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association and the Daniel Island Historical Society, Dr. O secured support from both groups for the project. In addition to research, plans for the cemetery project included creating a main entrance featuring brick masonry and a Philip Simmons’ inspired gate, a walkway from the existing recreational path, landscaping and other enhancements.
