Police investigate forgery, theft and fraud claims

The following incidents were taken from the City of Charleston Police Department reports within Team 5, which covers Daniel Island and Clements Ferry Road, between March 16-31, 2023. 
 
Theft from a Motor Vehicle
 
A resident of River Landing Drive contacted Team 5 on March 20 to report a theft. The victim advised that her Honda Pilot was entered while parked at a business on Seven Farms Drive. The vehicle was unlocked, and a clutch wallet, covered with a towel, was left on the seat. Items removed from the wallet included four credit cards, a South Carolina driver’s license, a social security card, gift cards, and $300 in cash. A charge of $967 was attempted, but declined, at a grocery store in Mount Pleasant. 
 
Forgery
 
On March 20, an officer responded to a residence on Wading Place in reference to a report of forgery and identity theft. The victim’s accountant discovered that an unknown individual had used her social security number to file a 2021 tax return, claiming $749 in income from DoorDash. The case is under investigation.   
 
Theft from a Building
 
On March 22, a complainant visited the Charleston Police Department to report a theft. The victim left her purse on a countertop at a restaurant located on Seven Farms Drive. When she returned to retrieve it, it was missing. The purse contained credit cards, a driver’s license, passport, and a social security card. Cards from the purse were used at a grocery store on Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant. Gifts cards were purchased in the amounts of $1,300, $1,500, and $500. Surveillance at the store captured images of a female, wearing a hat and a mask, at checkout. The case is pending. 
 
Bicycle Theft
 
A bicycle was stolen from Central Island Street on March 26. The victim reported that her Diamondback cycle, valued at $1,000, was removed from the complex’s parking garage after the lock had been cut. No surveillance video was made available. 
 
Wire Fraud
 
A complaint of wire fraud was filed via telephone on March 30. An individual hacked into a victim’s bank account and wired $125,000 to an unknown account. The transaction occurred inside of a bank located on Seven Farms Drive. An investigation is underway.
 
Collisions, tickets, warnings
 
During the reporting period, Team 5 investigated 11 collisions and issued 27 citations and five warnings. 
 
Clements Ferry Road Initiative
 
Team 5’s initiative to drive down collision rates on Clements Ferry Road is in effect. During a two-day time period, over 100 citations for speeding and reckless driving were issued on CFR by the traffic enforcement unit. Officers are identifying the hot spots for accidents and patrolling those areas on the roadway.
