Thanksgiving drive for Lowcountry Blessing Boxes
The Daniel Island Community Foundation will be collecting nonperishable food items, basic toiletries, baby supplies, and anything else that might be considered a blessing during a Thanksgiving Drive to supply blessing boxes in the area.
The Lowcountry Blessing Box Project’s goal is to place and maintain blessing boxes stocked with essential items that might be considered a blessing to someone who finds themselves in need. Items are anonymously donated and anonymously received. A simple rule applies, the organization states in a release, leave what you can, take what you need.
Collection will take place Tuesday, Oct. 29 through Tuesday, Nov. 26, so that supplies can be delivered in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Items can be dropped off at the DIPOA office – 130 River Landing Drive, Suite 1C – during office hours Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The POA release stated, “We had such great success with our previous drives that throughout the collection, items donated will be distributed to local blessing boxes by our Daniel Island POA staff members and volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to help distribute items to the blessing boxes, please email Dani Stix at Danielle.Stix@dicommunity.org.”
The Lowcountry Blessing Box Project reports that studies show adults with food insecurity will skip meals or reduce their portions to provide for children in their homes as they wait for payday. Many food-insecure families do not qualify for the assistance of food banks or are hesitant to turn to food banks for assistance due to the stigma. One “bad month” can be enough to plunge a household into food insecurity. Lay-offs at work, unexpected car maintenance, unforeseen medical bills, or an accident on the job can suddenly force a family to choose between buying food and paying bills. The purpose of this project is to bridge this gap.
