The Daniel Island News in 2022

Coverage, events, returning features, new products, awards
In this edition of the paper, we review some of the top news and sports stories that graced the pages of The Daniel Island News in 2022.

We consider it a privilege and a responsibility to report and deliver the news. We acknowledge that our job isn’t always easy and our product isn’t always perfect. I do know that everyone who works at the paper or regularly contributes content strives to be accurate and fair and to produce a newspaper in print and online that fulfills our mission of “promoting the power of community.”

Over the past year, these pages have been filled with coverage that fulfills that mission. We’ve kept you informed about development projects on Daniel Island and along the Clements Ferry Road corridor; covered elections and reported important information about our local governmental bodies; written business profiles and news; let you know what is going on in our schools; produced a biweekly police blotter, shared club news, and provided information and reporting that gave context and facts about stories that originally presented themselves on social media.

In our sports pages, we’ve covered high school sports at Philip Simmons and Bishop England high schools; followed the athletic endeavors of students as they went through college or into the professional realm; provided in-depth coverage of the Credit One Charleston Open; wrote features on adult athletes, and provided updates on youth sports.

Our pages were chock full with photos, opinions, events, and features about your neighbors. We carry informative columns written by professionals who are also your neighbors, such as: fishing, art, books, aging, law, nature, travel, fitness, finances, local history, things to do and eat, and real estate.

We brought back several columns that were on hiatus due to COVID or other concerns. The reception to the return of Kids Say has been rewarding – we’ve heard from parents who say that their own children want to read the paper to see if their friends are in the paper. Our
Building to Building feature also returned and is a wonderful avenue for readers to learn about all the interesting businesses that occupy the island and Clements Ferry Road corridor.

We added new events. The 2022 Author Series was a series of nine monthly author events (eight free and one paid) that featured 20 local and nationally known authors and one holiday author signing and book sale that included more than 35 authors. At the monthly events, the authors spoke about their books, answered questions and signed copies. We were able to provide this year-long series with financial support from our sponsors and small donations from community members. We also were able to make a donation to the nonprofit literacy group – Reading Partners of South Carolina. The Author Series will return in 2023 for a second year.

In addition to the Author Series, we held the second annual Bark in the Park at Waterfront Park and made a charitable donation to the Berkeley County Animal Center.

We expanded our digital newsletter offerings. We launched the Sports Friday E-Newsletter as our newest digital product, joining The Current (released on Mondays), Coming this Week (released on Wednesdays), and Featured Properties (released on Thursdays).

We won awards. On the news side, the paper was awarded first place for General Excellence as well as a slew of other writing and design awards. On the advertising side, we were awarded Designer of the Year as well as being recognized in other advertising design categories.

Thank you to The Daniel Island News staff, advertisers, sponsors and readers for helping us fulfill our mission in 2022!
