Letter to the Editor - June 8, 2023

With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of our Chief of Police, Luther Reynolds.
Chief Reynolds was a virtuous and dedicated public servant, an honorable man who led others with a deep sense of principled character. He was a man who radiated in humility, kindness and courage; a selfless person who was wholeheartedly devoted to his family, friends, community, and those he led at the Charleston Police Department. He was a leader who listened to everyone’s voice in the community and, as importantly, heeded what they were saying. His was a life filled with purpose, and his example motivated not only better policing, but it also inspired all of us to be better people.
Chief was a devoutly religious man, and the teachings of his faith served to be his life’s compass. His favorite Bible verse, Psalm 23, which was read by his loving son at the unforgettable Celebration of Life service, details a powerful message affirming God’s unconditional love, guidance, comfort, and protection in the face of adversity, including the darkest valleys of life. It is a message of trust, hope, and courage, the very essence of Chief Reynolds.
The graceful words of gratitude in his farewell letter to the community, just days before his passing, were entirely emblematic of this courageous and dignified man.
Rest in peace, dear friend.
