Readers offer support for shops impacted by Publix construction

It has been over six weeks since the Daniel Island Publix closed for demolition and renovation.

The absence of a grocery store anchor for the shopping center is impacting the other small local businesses at the center. In general, losing an anchor grocery store can cause a ripple effect of reduced foot traffic, vacancy, and financial challenges for the neighboring retailers.

As a local shopper, what would help attract you to the shopping center more often without the draw of a grocery store?

●Farmer’s Market in the parking lot. 46%

●POA-sponsored music or other events in the parking lot. 7%

●Sidewalk sales. 2%

●Outdoor restaurant events like “A Taste of Daniel Island.” 9%

●Large pop-up flea market or community rummage sale. 9%

●Other 27%

Comments:
• One or two times a month, have an event featuring these retailers. Advertising these events should not have to be covered by the retailers. Make the events fun, creative, “out of the box,” social and probably have to add some type of promotional aspect. Ask existing customers of these stores for their input. Offer existing DI social groups, special incentives/events for a day, weekend, evening.

• All of the above except for sidewalk sales. Outdoor restaurant events and farmers market being the top choices, POA-sponsored events could also include local nonprofits, which could help bring even more foot traffic

• Antique auto show in parking lot.

• Tailgate Party in the Parking Lot with local garage bands, sidewalk sales for businesses (including gift cards for future purchases). Let’s Buy Local theme.

• Classic Car Night, Easter Bunny, Outdoor Bingo, Dunk Tank, 4th of July Concert, small carnival, Halloween Party, if Publix is still under construction, put this year’s Christmas Tree in the shopping center parking lot.

• Several of these would attract me – combine them. I am trying my best to go into these places more often but it is hard.

• Honestly, a farmers market. BUT all of these ideas are beyond amazing.

• A farmers market would be great!
