Super Bowl storylines: Sibling rivalry; former coach face-off and Charleston ties

Phil’s Prediction: Eagles outsoar Chiefs, 27-21
My esteemed editor, Zach, asked me to share my opinions on who just might win Super Bowl LVII, whatever LVII means.

That’s easy, a no-brainer. The winner of the Feb. 12 glamor game pitting NFC entry Philadelphia Eagles and the AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs will feature a player from Cleveland Heights High School with the last name Kelce.

Not only that, but get this: The winning team will also feature an all-pro defensive end who just happened to play up the road from us at Fort Dorchester High School.

Take it to the bank. Guarantee it.

About Kelce: Both teams feature brothers who played at Cleveland Heights. Jason Kelce is a lineman for the Eagles, while Travis, who happens to be the best tight end in the business, plays for the Chiefs.

About Fort Dorchester: The Patriots produced some incredible players in the 2000s and at the top of that list just might be Carlos Dunlap and Robert Quinn, who teamed up as starting defensive ends for the Patriots. Dunlap plays for the Chiefs, and Quinn, you guessed it, plays for the Eagles after a midseason trade from the Dallas Cowboys.

It will be that type of Super Bowl as a team from this country’s biggest megalopolis faces a team from a part of America known as the Paris of the Plains on an Arizona desert battlefield.

Predicting a Super Bowl can be tough, especially if you let your imagination run wild. What if a starting quarterback goes down with an injury early? Or, what happens when a stout defense runs out of gas late in the game.

Every Super Bowl has an angle and this one has plenty of them including the Kelces, the Fort Dorchester defensive ends and oh yeah, Kansas City’s coach, Andy Reed, who just happened to coach the Eagles from 1999-2012, where he was unable to win a Super Bowl.

The Chiefs are making their third appearance in the Super Bowl in four years. They won the big game in 2020, lost to Tampa Bay in 2021 and did not make it last season as the Cincinnati Bengals won the AFC championship.

This year’s Super Bowl comes down to quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes is the best in the business – west of Cincinnati – and led the Chiefs to a monumental 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the 2020 Super Bowl that was accentuated by an impressive rally directed by Mahomes.

Mahomes will battle the Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, who will attempt to gain super elite status as one of the NFL’s next generation of great quarterbacks.

Mahomes was able to rally the Chiefs past the Bengals in the AFC championship for a controversial victory over Cincinnati.

This weekend, Mahomes still won’t be at 100 percent, and the Chiefs won’t be going up against an average defense like the Bengals presented.

The Eagles have the best defensive line in the business and will put pressure on Mahomes all day. The pass defense is solid; however, the Eagles’ run defense is flawed.

It won’t matter as the Eagles will jump out to an early lead, forcing the Chiefs to take to the air. In the meantime, Hurts will rock and roll the football world and gain the Super Bowl MVP as the Eagles claim a 27-21 victory.
