A tribute to Mike Sudzina

From the Daniel Island Rotary Club

“He was a really great guy.” A number of people offered that observation upon hearing the sad news of Mike Sudzina’s passing. Mike was indeed that, an affable, honorable gentleman who excelled in so many ways and made such a lasting impact on so many people.

Mike modeled the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self” in our Daniel Island Rotary Club. He chaired our annual rubber duck race fundraiser for many years and served a term as club president. For this, his many hands-on project contributions, and his willingness to say yes to any request, he was recognized as Rotarian of the Year.

A former captain in the Marine Corps, Mike served his country. As an active volunteer at Patriots Point Naval & Air Museum, he served our active and retired military members and was honored as Volunteer of the Year. Further, he served as Chair of the USS Yorktown Foundation.

Mike was a man devoted to faith, family, and friends. His love and devotion to Mary, his loving wife of 52 years, his daughters, Chrissie and Suzy, and their respective spouses, and his grandchildren were openly apparent. And yes, he also loved “Bonnie,” a vintage Pontiac Bonneville that won a best car award at the Kiawah Car Show. On weekends, Mary and Suds, as she called Mike, could be seen cruising around Daniel Island in Bonnie, as happy and carefree as they were as newlyweds.

There are many measures of a life well lived and Mike’s extraordinary life of service to others merits that recognition. Another measure is how much a person is admired and loved by those who knew him. On that scale, Mike truly excelled. With his cheerful manner, welcome smile, and hearty laugh, Mike was beloved. It was a joy to be in his company.

Today there is a hole in our hearts and our community with Mike Sudzina’s passing. Yet we also know that we, Daniel Island, and the world have been made a better place by this really great guy.
