BE lacrosse dominates, zeroes in on 100 straight wins

The Bishop England High School girls’ lacrosse team just doesn’t win. The Bishops dominate.

That was the case March 31 when the Bishops pounded Holly Springs (North Carolina) 22-3 at Jack Cantey Stadium.

The victory gave the Bishops a 13-0 record and extended their winning streak to an amazing 95 games. The Bishops have outscored foes 229-42 this spring. MaxPreps.com ranks the Bishops the No. 1 team in South Carolina regardless of classification, and the No. 4 team in the country.

“To be honest, Holly Springs was the best game we played all year,” coach Jeff Weiner said. “We were leading 15-1 at halftime. There’s not a whole lot we did wrong. We’re just that good on offense and defense. You name it and we did it well.”

Last spring, the Bishops won their sixth consecutive state championship in dominating fashion, outscoring foes 337-27. Weiner said the 2022 squad was the best team he’s had during his tenure at BE.

This year, Weiner decided to make an already demanding schedule even tougher by adding some high quality out-of-state teams, including Alpharetta and Pope High Schools from Georgia, Medina (Ohio) High School and Holly Springs. The Bishops outscored the four teams by a combined 68-25 margin.

Holly Springs coach L.J. Hepp told Weiner he’s never seen a team play as good of defense as the Bishops displayed.

“We actually sat down after the game and talked about how we play defense,” Weiner said.

The Bishops are just five victories away from 100 consecutive wins. They have three regular-season games remaining. They play Clover April 5 at home and finish up against Wando on April 10 and Porter-Gaud on April 12. If the Bishops reach 100 straight wins, it would come in the second round of the playoffs.

Evelyn Kitchin leads the Bishops with an average of 3.9 goals per game while Bo Rosato leads the team in assists with 2.5 a game.

Baseball

Bishop England and Philip Simmons will compete in the prestigious Hanahan Invitational Tournament, which will be held April 10-14.

Last spring, the Bishops had their first losing season in decades, posting a 6-16 record. This spring, the Bishops have shown improvement with a 5-7 record, including 4-3 in Region 7-AA.

Philip Simmons suffered heavy graduation losses from last year’s team that posted a 20-11 record.

The Iron Horses are 6-4 this spring, including 2-2 in Region 7-AAA.
