COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS TO LOWEST IN 15+ YEARS
According to the latest data from the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, Berkeley County’s unemployment rate has fallen below four percent for two consecutive months – 3.6 percent in November 2016 and 3.7 percent in December 2016.
This is the first time since September and October 2002 that Berkeley County has seen two consecutive months with an unemployment rate under four percent, according to a press release.
The last time Berkeley County experienced an unemployment rate lower than those set in November and December of 2016 was in April of 2001, when it reached 3.5 percent.
“Berkeley County is open for business, and Berkeley County means business,” said Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler. “By working aggressively to not only recruit new industry to the county but also to support our existing industries, Berkeley County is seeing tremendous success and opportunities for our residents.”

DI AUTHOR EARNS SECOND BOOK AWARD
The Jenkins Group and IndependentPublisher.com has announced the winners of the 2016 Living Now Book Awards, designed to recognize the year’s best lifestyle and world-changing books. Daniel Island resident and author Mariann Chambers’ book “Who Are These People” is on the list.
Each year, “books for better living” are chosen for their unique ability to enrich readers’ lives and promote sustainability. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded to books in 34 categories, ranging from cooking and coloring books to metaphysical and meditation.
“This year’s medalists prove that books can unite and inspire people, in spite of the inequalities and hardships that face our world on a day-to-day basis,” says Awards Director Jim Barnes. “Not only do books allow people to find balance amidst the chaos, they also serve as a potent force against ignorance and hatred. The 2016 Living Now award winners are a testament to the power of literature.”
Chambers’ book won the bronze medal in the Caregiving category. Chambers hopes her candid and often humorous account of what it means to be a parental caregiver helps others experiencing a similar role reversal. The book addresses a number of challenges facing caregivers, including dealing with uncomfortable situations, coping with mixed emotions, finding balance, maintaining sanity and a sense of humor, and loving someone who has become a stranger. Previously, “Who Are These People?” was selected as a finalist for the 2014 SeniorHomes.com Best Senior Living Award. The book can be found at Amazon.com or Island Expressions on Daniel Island.
