Capital Advisors aims to make tax time less terrifying

Daniel Island resident and working mom, Heather Engler, Esq., spent years consulting for small businesses and operating as a chief financial officer. Engler was an attorney, but saw an opportunity in finance.

In 2016, Engler started Capital Advisors, a “one-stop shop for small businesses.” Services include: bookkeeping, tax assistance, business advising and guidance. The expanding area made the Lowcountry the perfect place to set up shop.

“Charleston has many growing businesses that need to ensure their finances are healthy and organized,” Engler said. “We love working with local business owners to help them to be able to focus on their business operations. Navigating licensing and taxes can be confusing and overwhelming. We like to be able to take the stress out of this part of owning a business.”

Client Stephanie Mackara, president of Charleston Investment Advisors LLC, has been with the business for four years and appreciates the fact it is a woman-owned, small, local business. Mackara works closely with Engler organizing and preparing profit and loss reports and balance sheets, as well as coordinating necessary 1099s.

“They take the time to really understand the nuances of my business, help to coordinate with my accountant and generally are available whenever I need a report or have a question,” Mackara said. “When working with them you get a sense that they are an extension of our firm, part of our trusted team. We rely on them as we would a trusted business partner.”

Client Taylor Carter originally worked for Capital Advisors when she was employed as a controller at a local underground utility company. Along with her daily duties, the company books needed to be cleaned-up. With so many other day-to-day responsibilities, Carter needed help to get the books updated and in order.

“I found Heather,” Carter said. “Her and I tackled many tasks together to get their books up to date.”

After having a baby, Carter worked from home for about a year, but in June 2022 the company asked her to come back to the office full-time. Wanting more time with her young child, Carter reached out to Engler for a job where she could continue to work from home. All the numbers added up and she has been working at Capital Advisors ever since.

“All of our bookkeepers are amazing to work with, everyone has such different knowledge of a wide variety of business and tax laws,” Carter added.

If tax time terrifies you, Engler has advice for the upcoming tax season. “Now is the time to get organized since it’s the beginning of the year. If you’re a business owner struggling to get 2022 information together for your tax professional, hire someone to help you and then be sure to start 2023 off right. You can do this by having a professional keep your finances organized monthly.”
