Set sail for a summer adventure with Sister City Cruises

Summer is the perfect time to explore the area’s beautiful waterways. Lowcountry residents who want to get out on the water with an experienced captain at the helm can get onboard with Daniel Island’s Sister City Cruises.

The owners of Sister City Cruises, Dave and Shelley Kuczkir, are both United States Coast Guard licensed captains who live on Daniel Island. The company is named after Charleston’s sister cities — Savannah, Beaufort and Georgetown — that are linked by cultural and historical ties. A variety of luxe-adventure cruises take guests to these coastal cities, as well as other Lowcountry seaports.

Customers have plenty of packages to choose from, including barrier island tours and overnight cruises to Beaufort, Hilton Head Island or Georgetown. The company does a popular plantation tour down the Ashley River, a favorite with history buffs. Brunch items and craft beer tastings are also on the menu for boaters to enjoy.

The husband and wife team started their company in 2013, but Dave has been exploring the region’s water for almost 30 years. Sister City Cruises is more than just a business for the pair, it’s an adventure.

“My absolute favorite activity is to hop on a boat and cruise overnight to one of Charleston’s neighboring historic seaports. The natural areas to the north and south of Charleston are stunning; the views from the waterways are even more spectacular,” Dave said.

Their fleet consists of two boats, a sporty day boat and a comfy cabin cruiser. The Cheers Patty is a 20-foot Dauntless Boston Whaler. It’s the ideal boat for exploring scenic rivers and creeks while learning more about area sea life.

MaryTime is a 30-foot Back Cove cabin cruiser that is perfect for large parties or an intimate family experience for people who want to cruise in style and comfort.

When Stephanie Mackara had six of her high school besties in town from Philadelphia, she wanted to do something out of the ordinary. Sister City Cruises pulled out all the stops and created a Sunday brunch harbor cruise for the women.

“It was the perfect end to a perfect weekend,” Mackara said. “The best part about Shelley and Dave is that they are amazing captains and hosts. They are accessible, gracious and generous without being invasive — which is not easy to do on a boat. We felt well taken care of and very much at home with them.”

Mackara said the experience is something she would recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy the waterways and take in the beautiful Charleston scenery.

“If you haven’t enjoyed this experience yet, it is a must-do. I look forward to my next adventure with them. It’s a great way to celebrate a special event or entertain out of town guests,” she added.
