Sportsman Island Drive is home to church, boat dealer, and PT services

Sportsman Island Drive is one of Daniel Island’s most visible and widely seen business sectors, easily spotted while driving on I-526 near the Clements Ferry Road exits.

 

Venture down Sportsman Island, around the corner from St. Thomas Island Drive, and you’ll discover it’s home to a staple of long-standing businesses and a well-known church.

 

ONE Fellowship is a nondenominational Christian church that began in a living room in the Smythe Park neighborhood of Daniel Island in 2014, and then a year later, moved into the existing building at 142 Sportsman Island Drive. 

 

“Our story began when a group of friends and families began asking the question, ‘What would it look like to launch a new gospel community to serve and reach an ever-changing Charleston and world for generations to come?’” said senior pastor Paul Sorenson.

 

Inspired by a scripture in the Book of Jeremiah that reads, “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city,” Sorenson said ONE fellowship is built on community and the “good fortune of living it out together.” 

 

He said the church’s sense of community includes regular gatherings at Pierce Park Pavilion, discipleship groups in various homes across Daniel Island, and open-door Sunday services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

 

“We love Daniel Island and Charleston,” Sorenson said. “We are a gospel community made up of individuals and families originally from across the U.S. who are all tethered together by God’s grace.”

 

Upstairs from ONE Fellowship, on the second floor of 142 Sportsman Island Drive, are two distinct physical therapy practices.

 

Holy City Pediatric Therapy provides pediatric physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech services to children.

 

The team of physical therapists specializes in treating children with autism, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays. 

 

“We fully believe that a kid’s occupation is to play, so we set it up that there is a lot of playing one-on-one,” said owner Dusty Tolley. “We want them to feel like they are having fun, so there are a lot of swings, a treehouse, a rock-climbing wall, and a lot of cool sensory activities.”

 

Tolley, who owns the 5,000-square-foot practice with his wife Kellye, said the clinicians immerse children in a three-week program, or “boot camp,” to help them successfully learn developmental skills.

 

“We can help them crawl and walk and talk for the first time,” Tolley said. 

 

Holy City Pediatric opened in 2021 and treats families not only from South Carolina but across the country.

 

“I love it,” Tolley said. “As a physical therapist, the intensive program is one of my favorite things. We work the kids really, really hard at whatever discipline they are doing.”

 

Across the hall is Imagine Physical Therapy, a Christian-based practice specializing in manual physical therapy techniques. 

 

Clinic manager Collin Weyer said Imagine serves a wide variety of patients, from teenagers needing orthopedic care to late-stage geriatrics. He said the practice is a big believer in hands-on treatment and the healing power of one-on-one contact and care.

 

“We advocate for a lot of people on Daniel Island,” said Weyer. “Especially for those staying active in their mid-to-later years with pickleball injuries, tennis injuries, and general workout injuries.”

 

Weyer said the practice also treats patients requiring postoperative care for surgeries involving shoulders, rotator cuffs, cervical, lumbar, or hip issues.

 

“We really don’t limit ourselves,” Weyer said. “We consider ourselves experts in the general sense. We have a lot of relationships with orthos in town, so we get a lot of post-op referrals.”

 

In a brand-new building next door, at 152 Sportsman Island Drive, is the MarineMax Charleston showroom.

 

MarineMax is a longtime boat dealer that specializes in selling a variety of brands, including Scout boats locally manufactured in Summerville.

 

Marketing manager Jessica McLawhorn said the dealer prides itself on taking care of customers after their buying experience to make sure they feel comfortable on the water.

 

“We do service, but we also like to show our customers how to have fun with getaways, called “dayaways,” she said. “We have continuing education and get them out on the water with new experiences, like this weekend we are doing a Fort Sumter dayaway.”

 

McLawhorn said the newly built showroom is just “30 feet over” from its previous location.

 

“We are so happy to be in an expanding part of Daniel Island,” she said. “Overall, the community aspect, with what this area brings – family and boating – is an opportunity to be close to the water, and Daniel Island is central to everything.”
