TEN YEARS AGO
In the June 29, 2006 edition of the paper we reported that residential development continued to boom in and around Daniel Island. At the previous week’s City Planning Commission’s meeting, the Board approved three new subdivisions on Daniel Island (two extensions in Daniel Island Park and an extension of Pierce and Beekman Streets in the area behind Smythe Park Pond on the south side of the island to the Wando River). A fourth subdivision was greeted with resident opposition and was deferred until the next Planning Commission meeting. That development, the cottages located on Island Park Drive across from the club fitness and pool facilities, were eventually approved and built. Additionally, a 104-unit development on St. Thomas Island Drive, Shell Ring, was slated for construction to begin in August 2006.

In the June 30, 2011 edition of the paper the top news story was that Daniel Island resident Thom Iannarino was meeting with a group of men at Summit Place every Tuesday morning. Iannarino, who served in the military from 1967 to 1984, was raising funds to take several World War II veterans in the group on a Lowcountry Honor Flight to Washington D.C. the following spring.
