TEN YEARS AGO - Election 2006
In the November 2, 2006 edition of the paper the top news story was the 2006 election previews of various candidates running for office: the top office up for grabs was governor, pitting incumbent Republican Mark Sanford against Democratic challenger Tommy Moore. Also new that year: It was the first general election that all of Berkeley County used touch screen computers that tally your ballots instantaneously.
In other news, we reported that part-time Daniel Island resident Bennett Bozarth donated an organ to St. James AME Church on St. Thomas Island Drive. The Baldwin Model 236 – considered a Cadillac of gospel organs – belonged to his late mother.
Brand new City of Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen visited with Daniel Island community and school leaders.

FIVE YEARS AGO - The little Sheltie that could
In the November 3, 2011 edition of the paper we reported on the return of Connor, a Sheltie dog that had been missing from his Codner’s Ferry home for 22 days. His owner, Lindsay West, finally found Connor in the Etiwan Park neighborhood after a 4:30 am phone call from islander Larry Whetsell, who had spotted the dog and had seen the missing dog flyers.
In top business news, we reported a high number of retail vacancies on the island but that existing business owners were optimistic.
We highlighted the candidates for the Mayor of the City of Charleston. Four people were running against Mayor Joseph Riley: political newcomers Craig Jelks, David Ashby Farrow, and Joshua R. Kennedy; and, city councilman William Dudley Gregorie.
In school news, Governor Nikki Haley brought a topic even more frightening than ghouls and goblins into focus for students at the Daniel Island School - bullying.
