Election results for DI/Cainhoy

Ballots are still being counted, and in some cases re-counted, but according to the “unofficial” election results from the Berkeley County Elections Office, all but one of the Daniel Island and Cainhoy Precincts voted in favor of John Tecklenburg for Charleston’s new Mayor. Tecklenburg will be in a run-off with fellow mayoral candidate Leon Stavrinakis on November 17, as the top two vote-getters overall in the city election. Tecklenburg received 37 percent of the vote, compared to Stavrinkakis’s 36 percent.

For City Council District 1, which includes all of Daniel Island, the majority of the Cainhoy Peninsula, and portions of downtown Charleston, candidate Shawn Pinkston holds a 7-vote lead over incumbent Gary White. Election results show that 1,077 votes were cast for Pinkston, compared to 1,070 for White. An automatic recount will take place in this contest later this week, according to Adam Hammons, director of Berkeley County Elections and Voter Registration.

“It will happen immediately following certification on Thursday,” added Hammons, of the pending Pinkston/White recount. “Certification is at noon at the Charleston County Elections Office. The City of Charleston Municipal Election Commission will certify the results then order the recount and then certify those results.”

Because neither candidate received 50 percent of the vote plus one, as required for a win based on state election laws, a runoff is likely, added Hammons.

“A runoff can happen with only two candidates,” he stated. “…In this case both candidates received almost the same number of votes and with a few write-in votes also cast neither candidate exceeded the 50 percent mark. Currently, Pinkston has 49.93 percent, White has 49.61 percent, and the write-ins have .46 percent. So as it stands there will be a runoff in District 1, pending Certification and a Recount.”
