Extra, extra! Read all about it!

This week, The Daniel Island News is handing over the newspaper to the next generation of storytellers.

Students from Bishop England High School, Daniel Island School, and Philip Simmons High School have taken on the roles of reporters, writers, and photographers to create this special edition, bringing you stories from their own unique perspectives in this special Students Takeover Edition.

From thought-provoking opinion pieces to coverage of school events and student achievements, these middle and high school students have been hard at work gathering research, conducting interviews, snapping photos, and crafting articles.

To kick off the project, we reached out to local schools, inviting students who wanted to see their names in print to take part. Whether incorporated as a class assignment or completed on their own time after school, students were provided a rubric – more like a journalism crash course – that outlined the basics of news writing, including how to structure an article, conduct interviews, and present facts accurately and engagingly.

The students were encouraged to write about what’s going on in their schools or neighborhoods, highlight peers or teachers, spotlight exciting projects, or write a column or opinion piece on education-related topics. All topics were chosen entirely by the budding reporters, without outside influence, ensuring that this edition was truly a Student Takeover.

The goal of the takeover is to give local students a voice in the newspaper while also providing them the opportunity to experience the world of journalism firsthand, and that they did.

Each article highlights the voices and creativity of the area’s local youth, offering an inside look at the topics that matter to them.

Explore this fresh, creative look at the Daniel Island and Clements Ferry communities through the eyes of these talented young journalists!
