● The S.C. State Ports Authority rejected a $25 million offer from the Daniel Island POA for its Daniel Island property. Former State Rep. Jim Merrill stated that he suspected the SPA still wanted to build a shipping container terminal on its 1,300-acre Daniel Island property, despite a 2002 legislative directive to use the site only for dredge spoil. The 2002 legislation directed the SPA to build instead at the abandoned naval base in North Charleston.

● The city of Charleston completed two new public tennis courts in Freedom Park, located behind the Daniel Island School.

TEN YEARS AGO – Aug. 1, 2013

● Larry Whetsell, maintenance manager for the Daniel Island Property Owners Association (POA) at the time, was featured in the Familiar Faces column. Whetsell worked full-time for the POA. He was also on call 24 hours a day for emergencies. A typical day might have included replacing broken light fixtures or sprinkler heads, managing contracts for the island’s common spaces, making repairs at one of the two community pools (at the time), inspecting an island pond, and cleaning up the roadways. That position, now known as field operations manager, is currently held by Chris Hamil.

FIVE YEARS AGO – Aug. 2, 2018

● Cainhoy Elementary School feedback meeting held. Former Berkeley County School Superintendent Dr. Eddie Ingram, Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Karen Whitley and other district representatives met with stakeholders at Cainhoy Elementary School to gain feedback on the qualities community members wanted to see in a new principal for the school. Aidra Shaw, former principal at CES, left for a new position leading Westview Primary School.

● The Daniel Island Toastmasters Club achieved a historical first – “Select Distinguished” status. According to Claire Law, a member of the Daniel Island Toastmasters Club, this means that the organization met seven out of nine Toastmaster International yearly goals.

● DI Ferry launched a “Boat to Work Day.” The historic event was sponsored by the Coastal Conservation League, Charleston Moves, Gotcha Bike, BoomTown and the Daniel Island Ferry. Also offering support onsite was Lowcountry Go, a regional partnership between Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments, SCDOT and the Federal Highway Administration.
