TEN YEARS AGO – Bug off, mosquitoes!

A hot topic in the April 24, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News was mosquito management. According to Jeff Cary, manager of Berkeley County’s Mosquito Abatement program, without pest management, Daniel Island would be “uninhabitable.” Mosquitoes have always flourished in the Lowcountry environment, particularly on Daniel Island, where moist habitats are certainly plentiful (they need only one inch of water to lay their eggs). One way to combat the pesky insect is to rely on the efforts of Cary and his team of field technicians who make it their mission to keep the flying menaces at bay.

“Integrated pest management is our strategy,” said Cary, who tracks about 55 species of mosquitoes throughout Berkeley County. “…Most people, when they think about mosquito abatement, they think about the spray trucks that come out at night, because that’s what they’ve seen growing up. That’s what they’ve heard and remember, but the program is really a little bigger.”

In business news, it was reported that a 281-unit rental community (Daniel Island Village) was under construction at the end of Seven Farms Drive, behind the Bishop England football field, and was nearing completion. A Greystar-built project, it was to be only the second apartment community on Daniel Island, joining Seven Farms Apartments as a rental option for those wishing to move to the island.

FIVE YEARS AGO – Daniel Island Farmers Market to debut for its fifth year

The feature article in the April 25, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News spotlighted the Daniel Island Farmers Market. The market, which is sponsored by the Daniel Island Community Fund, has been deemed as an event held to “encourage a sense of community, sharing, and fun, while supporting Lowcountry farmers, growers and artists in their mission to provide opportunities to shop and eat local.”

That year, event coordinators planned to include live music at the market each week.

In other island news, Daniel Island residents Jacob Driggers and Chris May spent months training for the Boston Marathon. What they didn’t know was that the event would be forever marred by two deadly bomb blasts. They both received medals for finishing the marathon, having crossed the finish line about 80 minutes before the explosions took place.
