Holder Properties calls public meeting over Nowell Creek tree removal

Holder Properties is asking the community to join them in a discussion about the proposed tree removal along Daniel Island Drive at the Nowell Creek Village Townhome project.

Recently, the Nowell Creek developer requested to remove 24 mature and protected trees and replace them with 24 rental townhomes, but then deferred the request following more than 300 public comments regarding the request were made to the City of Charleston.

Holder Properties officials said they want to discuss the Nowell Creek Village Townhomes project with the community. The meeting is set for Wednesday, June 25, 5-7 p.m. at the Marshside at Nowell Creek Village off Daniel Island Drive.

“While many aspects of the project have been previously shared, this meeting will provide an opportunity to walk through essential details related to environmental impact, including the significant investment in replanting and enhancing the long-term health of the local tree canopy as part of the plan,” according to a released statement to community officials. “We invite all interested neighbors to hear directly from the development team, review the comprehensive plan, and engage in open discussion about this phase of Nowell Creek Village.”

The announcement went on to state the community meeting will “share the full vision for the Nowell Creek Village Townhomes project. The team will provide a comprehensive look at the project plan, including how environmental impact, expanded tree planting, and long-term community benefits are being thoughtfully integrated into this next phase of development.”

In a recent story about the tree removal request, the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association had pointed to four key tests needed for a variance approval that island residents should consider:

• There are extraordinary and exceptional conditions pertaining to this piece of property (requiring a variance)

• These conditions do not generally apply elsewhere

• Because of these conditions, enforcing the ordinance would prohibit or unreasonably restrict the utilization of the property

• The authorization of a variance will not be of substantial detriment to the public good, and the character of the district will not be harmed by the granting of the variance.

The Daniel Island News will continue to update this story as it develops.
