Kids' Fishing Tournament, Peralta Palooza, and shrimp as your ticket to success

Please don’t forget the 7th Annual Daniel Island Kids’ Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 17 at Smythe Park Lake from 9 till 11 a.m. It is a great way to introduce fishing to your kids. If you are a lucky, fishing will become something that your children love to do (with you). Hopefully, the DI Kids’ Fishing Tournament becomes a new family tradition and a perpetual Father’s Day present.

Years ago, I invited my siblings, their children and significant others to spend Father’s Day week at our house in the Florida Keys. Participation was 100 percent (20 people). So, we rented my neighbor’s house to accommodate the crowd and named the event Peralta Palooza. A week of family, fishing, food and fun. It has become a family tradition with 100 percent participation for over 10 years. The only downside to Peralta Palooza is that I miss the island kids’ fishing tournament. Even in my absence, I encourage you to fish the event. I hope it begins a tradition for your family.

While I am in Summerland Key, I have received some great fishing reports from home. Trout are abundant and eating. Lures and live-bait are producing equally well. Creek shrimp are what the Trout (and Redfish) are focusing on. Thanks to another warm winter, shrimp are seemingly everywhere and easy to catch with a cast net.

Fishing a live shrimp under a rattle floats pretty much guarantees fast action. Something always eats a hapless shrimp. It may not always be a Trout or Redfish, but who does not like fast action?

Live shrimp under a float is a great way to get children hooked on fishing. So, after the DI Kids’ Fishing Tournament, when your children ask you to take them fishing, shrimp is your ticket to success.
