Noshing Nirvana: The Shelter is a lunch time favorite

When I have meetings in Mt. Pleasant, I always try to arrange them around lunch at The Shelter Kitchen and Bar. Located near Shem Creek at 202 Coleman Boulevard, The Shelter serves a varied lunch including apps, soups, salads, seafood and burgers; however, I almost always order the Golden Beet Salad with Salmon. This past Friday proved to be no exception - I ordered my standard as I lunched with Daniel Island News salesperson Ronda Schilling.
The salad is served with fried goat cheese, toasted pecans, cranberries and white balsamic vinaigrette over arugula. You can have it with or without a protein. Without the protein, the salad is very affordable – the small is $8 and the large is $10.50. I ordered the small and topped it with the Salman, at an additional $6. As you can see from the photo, it was topped with two large portions of the Salman – I had to take one home with me as it was too much food for one person.
This dish is fabulous because of the mix of flavors, and the fried goat cheese balls are so amazing. I usually share one with my husband, but on Friday I ate both myself! Other topping options for the salad include grilled chicken breast ($4), sautéed shrimp ($4) and portabella mushrooms ($3).
Ronda had the blackened fish sandwich. Served with the catch of the day at market price, the sandwich is topped with slaw, Srirachi aioli, lettuce and tomato. On Friday, the catch was flounder. Ronda had the Brussels sprouts as her side.
She described her meal, “There’s nothing like fresh bread and fresh fish, both the fish and bread melted in my mouth. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky and moist. A perfect amount for a nice lunch. A mimosa would have topped it off, however it was a working day.”
“I love the atmosphere at Shelter with its indoor/outdoor bar patio,” she continued. “The indoors just continues to the outdoors often with live music.”
Want to share your tale of noshing nirvana? It’s simple – just respond to the following or go online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7VNR3ZT to answer the same questions as here:
1) Where were you served the best thing you ate all month?
2) What was the food that left you speechless (mainly because you couldn’t stop horking it down)?
3) Can you describe what made the dish so magical? Be sure to speak slowly...
4) Dish more on the dish, if you can - price, portion size, availability on regular menu, and the psychological repercussions of consuming something so rad.
5) Please email a photo of your to-die-for dish and responses to the four questions above (don’t leave any out!) to sdetar@thedanielislandnews.com.
