Wharf 7 concert to benefit DIPAC
Get ready to put on your dancing shoes, enjoy some good old-fashioned fixins, and savor a new, festive outdoor atmosphere – all while supporting a worthy cause.
Planners for an upcoming benefit concert on Daniel Island hope the event will showcase two of the community’s new developments – the new Wharf 7 Apartment community now open near the entrance to Daniel Island Park and the proposed Daniel Island Performing Arts Center (DIPAC).
Wharf 7 developer Mike Schwarz said as soon as he heard that a new Daniel Island Performing Arts Center was in the works, he contacted Daniel Island Company President Matt Sloan to see how he could help. Sloan put him in touch with DIPAC founder Mary Gould.
“We are new to Daniel Island and we are always looking for ways to make a difference in the neighborhoods where we build,” said Schwarz. “The DIPAC will be a great addition to the Daniel Island community, so if we can play a small part in helping make that happen we are excited to help.”
Schwarz and his team have planned a benefit concert for DIPAC to be held on October 27 in the new Wharf 7 outdoor amphitheater, located on the apartment community’s grounds at 515 Robert Daniel Drive.
“We have this great new venue at Wharf 7 perfectly suited for outdoor concerts,” added Schwarz.
The event will feature local band The High Divers, an Americana group based in Charleston that just returned from an extended tour. Also on tap will be beer, wine, barbeque by Pampered Palate, and a pumpkin carving contest.
“(Our goal is to) raise as much money as we can for DIPAC and show everyone that attends a good time,” said Schwarz. “…I am really hoping for a great turn out from Daniel Islanders. I promise they’ll have a great time. We have received great support from the Daniel Island Company, Benefitfocus, Blackbaud, Greystar and a number of our vendors.”
Tickets for the concert are $50 each. Kids age 15 and under receive free admission and food. DIPAC awarded prestigious grant
Planners for the Daniel Island Performing Arts Center are continuing their fundraising campaign to bring the state’s first LORT (League of Resident Theatres) to Charleston. The center will be located on Island Park Drive in the heart of the island’s commercial district. Founder Mary Gould announced last week that the South of Broadway Theatre Company, which will be housed in the DIPAC, has been awarded a 2016 National Theatre Company grant from the American Theatre Wing, best known as the creator of the Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards.
According to a DIPAC press release on the award, the grants were created by the American Theatre Wing to recognize and support the most promising emerging theatre companies. The 2016 grants for initial support are being presented to only seven companies from around the country. Selected grant recipients must have “a distinctive mission, cultivated an audience, and nurtured a community of artists in ways that strengthen and demonstrate the quality, diversity, and dynamism of American theatre” stated the release.
“The recognition from the American Theatre Wing, founder and sponsor of the Tony Awards, is a tremendous honor,” said Gould, “As one of only seven theatre companies across the country to receive this recognition it is a profound endorsement and validation of our history, our product and our vision of the past 16 years to become a LORT theatre and Tony Awards eligible. As we move forward with the launching of the Daniel Island Performing Arts Center which will be South of Broadway’s future home, that vision becomes possible.”
