Charleston Recreation Department expands Daniel Island offerings

What’s happening at the fire department lately? Are Daniel Island’s finest finding their collective inner child? Is the city renting space to Chuck E. Cheese?

No, this fun’s for you, compliments of the Charleston Recreation Department.

The city has launched monthly picnic-style get-togethers for Daniel Island families and Recreation Coordinator William Williams wants to spread the word. Although attendance was sparse at the past two parties, earlier events such as the Toddler Olympics and Teddy Bear Picnic were a resounding success, he said.

Next month’s "Taste of Recreation" party has a Valentine’s Day theme. Called "Share a Little Dough for a Loved One," children will bake and decorate cookies that they can pass out to friends and family. It will be held Feb. 13 from 4-6 p.m. at the Daniel Island Fire Department.

"We need to let people know what’s going on here," Williams said. "We’re here for the residents of Daniel Island and we want to find out what we can do for them."

The recreation department is working with the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association (DINA) to plan future community events. In addition, it plans to conduct a resident survey to assess recreation needs.

Here is a sampling of other upcoming winter and spring events:
