Althea Gibson Club Court rededicated in namesake’s honor
On Saturday, April 2, the Credit One Charleston Open personnel rededicated the Althea Gibson Club Court to its late namesake. Gibson, born in Clarendon County, was the first Black tennis player to win a Grand Slam and was the first Black player to compete in Wimbledon. In total, Gibson won 11 Grand Slam titles and was a consistently ranked top-10 player. The rededication, in the form of a new South Carolina State House Resolution, was presented to Gibson’s family by Rep. Wendell Gilliard and Charleston Tennis President and Tournament Director Bob Moran.
