FIFTEEN YEARS AGO - Aug. 7, 2008
● Daniel Island School was set to welcome close to 1,000 students through its doors, a substantial increase over the 543 who reported on opening day in 2006. Despite budget cuts, which the Berkeley County School District attributed to the new funding system under Act 388, DIS did not have any budget cuts to staff.
● The 2008 tough economy, coupled with concern about the island’s commercial viability, prompted former Charleston City District 1 Councilman Gary White to convene a business workshop at the Daniel Island Library. Its purpose was to provide resources for existing and prospective Daniel Island businesses. Representatives from area governmental and nonprofit organizations discussed topics that included economic development, business survival tips and resources, rents, advertising, funding and business development.
● USA Rugby hosted an international rugby match at the Charleston Battery’s stadium on Daniel Island, then named Blackbaud Stadium, with the USA matched against a French team.
TEN YEARS AGO – Aug. 8, 2013
● National Night Out: The Charleston Police Department Crime Prevention Team hosted a “Meet and Greet” with Daniel Island residents in August as part of the 2013 National Night Out program. The gathering took place in the courtyard at Vespa Pizzeria.
● Hot Dog: Feedback from a survey showed that readers were health-conscious and nutritionally-minded, but also enjoyed a good hot dog every once in a while. Popular hotdog spots mentioned in Mount Pleasant were Jacks Cosmic Dogs, Johnny’s and Skoogies. Closer to Daniel Island, the Daniel Island Grille got some love, too. But readers were eager to list another top spot to get a dog – Joseph P. Riley (RiverDogs) Stadium.
FIVE YEARS AGO – Aug. 9, 2018
● City of Charleston Daniel Island Recreation: Some local residents pushed the city to reconsider the facility’s design before construction began because they believed the design’s one full-size basketball court would not be enough to accommodate all of the local athletes in need of gym space.
● Roundabout: The City of Charleston TRC approved the construction of a proposed new single-lane roundabout for the intersection of Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive. The project was estimated to cost $2.54 million.
● Laura Alberts Tasteful Options of Daniel Island was recognized with an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator for its wine selection.
● SPA DI land: United States Congressman Mark Sanford held a press conference pushing his proposal to turn some of the State Ports Authority’s (SPA) land on Daniel Island into a park. He proposed the name “Tri-County Waterfront Park.”
